Donut Day? There’s a wine for that.

Hello National Donut Day.  I know you were created by the Salvation Army in 1938  but I  never focused on celebrating you as a holiday before now.  So, here goes…

Dearest Donut,

I know I don’t talk to you often, but, I’m one of your biggest fans.

I’m the one who would take the last donut from the office coffee room (after I had already eaten my share). And I think a donut for dessert after dinner is a grand idea.

And Dear Donut, not only do you merit the respect of a dessert, you have more than earned your own place as a wine pairing partner.

National Donut Day

Donuts and Wine

Here’s the general rule.  Sweet pairs well with sweet.

Locally, our friend Ken from the American Wine Society (AWS) recommends a cinnamon bun from Oram’s in Beaver Falls with a Sauternes, a French sweet wine from the Sauternais region of the Graves section in Bordeaux.

Pairing enhances your enjoyment of food and wine. At Wine Time, the local chapter of the AWS, will have a list of recommended wines to pair with the light menu offerings of the food purveyors.  There are many sweet, savory and fresh choices.

On June 18th, there are approximately 140 wines available for sampling and purchase from 14 Wineries .  You’ll find some new wines to enjoy!

Just bring your own donuts.

Cheers!
